Ali Millar
Born in Edinburgh and raised in a cult in the Scottish Borders, Ali Millar is a critically acclaimed author working in books and screen.
With first class honours in textiles and a background in design, and later an MA with distinction in Creative Writing, Ali is a visual story teller across mediums. In 2024 The Scotsman named her their artist to watch.
Drawn to the uncanny both visually and thematically, exploring climate chaos, isolation, and grief, Ali's work has drawn the attention of the national press and many of her contemporaries. Her debut novel AVA ANNA ADA (White Rabbit) was called every bit as gripping as it is horrifying by Ian Rankin, and a work of exquisite strangeness by Wendy Erskine, while Rob Doyle described it as tense, ruthless and fevered. On publication her debut memoir, THE LAST DAYS (PRH, 2022) was described as a real life Handmaid's Tale. It was a Bookseller Choice, a Scotsman One to Watch and a BBC debut to watch. In a six-page feature, The Sunday Times Magazine published first serial extract, and it went on to become a Guardian Book of the Year.
Her debut feature, an adaptation of THE LAST DAYS, is in development with Junction Pictures, in partnership with Screen Scotland.
In 2025 she was a UNESCO Writer in Residence in Sweden, and guest lectured at the University of Bologna.
